3D Scanning devices create large volumes of "point cloud" data. Sometime there is also color per vertex data or texture maps. Turning this raw data into useful 3D models can require 3rd party software.

    There are several functions that are useful in creating 3D models from "point clouds".

    • Aligning a merging multiple "point cloud" data sets
    • Turning "point clouds" into a polygonal model
    • Reducing the number of polygons in a 3D model
    • Turning a polygonal model into a NURBS model

    The better scanner independent software packages are tuned to handle more and larger datasets, or minimize the amount of user interaction required.
